Week Two: Procrastinators, Read This First
“Making the conscious decision to something more pleasurable over a less pleasurable task is the definition of procrastination.” It also, at times, is the story of my life. The focus of this week was obviously to not procrastinate. The daily practices for this week were excellent. They really help you to see and pinpoint what exactly leads you to procrastinate. The book explains that procrastination is an avoidance behavior, it helps you to spot when you are trying to avoid something, and analyze those feelings in that moment. Identifying key phrases, can help one to begin spotting where procrastination is problem.
One of the key phrases mention was “I’m not in the mood”. This is a crucial key phrase for myself, because I use it often. I like to use it, because I can rationalize to myself that forcing myself to do something I don’t want to do — is like stealing from my energy. So I talk myself out of feeling bad about not going to the gym — because I did not at all last week. I either didn’t feel like it, or did not have the time!
Taking a closer look at my procrastination behavior tendencies this week, will definitely help me as I move forward into the future weeks, to make sure what needs to get done is getting done. Now that I have a better understanding of my “key phrases” and feelings behind them — I can be better prepared to stop procrastination dead in its tracks. This week I need to get quite a few things done before Friday. It will be interesting to see how the skills I learned this past week will help!

Too much forward thinking — concentrating solely on how something will turn out — disengages us from the process necessary to complete the task. Cite examples of how forward thinking has caused procrastination. If you are waiting for perfect conditions to exist before beginning a process, you may never get started at all. Let go of the idea of success or failure, and revel in the act of doing.
